Today, we take a moment to remember the devastating fire of April 13th, 1982, at the Hollywood Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, a pivotal moment in the city's narrative.

A Beacon of Knowledge: The Los Angeles Public Library

Before delving into the events of that tragic day, let's reflect on the history of the Central Library itself. Established in 1872, the Los Angeles Public Library system has been a cornerstone of the city’s cultural and educational landscape. The Central Library, designed by architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue and opened in 1926, is an emblem of this legacy. Known for its striking architecture blending Egyptian and Mediterranean Revival styles, the building is not just a library but a landmark, featuring a central tower topped with a tiled mosaic pyramid.

The Day the Light Dimmed: The Fire of April 13th, 1982

On the morning of April 13th, 1982, a fire broke out in the historic Hollywood Branch Library, marking one of the most catastrophic library fires in American history. The flames devastated the structure and its contents, including a large portion of the library's 90,000 book collection, of which only 20,000 could be salvaged.

A New Chapter: The Samuel Goldwyn Foundation's Contribution

Following the destruction, the Hollywood community, including the Samuel Goldwyn Foundation, played a crucial role in rebuilding and modernizing the library. The new building, designed by architect Frank Gehry and opened in 1986, was entirely funded by the Samuel Goldwyn Foundation. This new structure at 1623 N. Ivar Ave stands as a symbol of resilience and innovation, featuring modern design with plenty of light and open space, designed to house over 100,000 volumes.

Addressing the Past and Present

The original Hollywood Branch Library stood on Hollywood Boulevard but moved to its current location on Ivar Avenue due to its expansion needs. Today's library, now known as the Frances Howard Goldwyn – Hollywood Regional Library, not only serves as a functional library but also as a testament to the community's ability to overcome adversity.
