Los Angeles pizza sucks you say? - A Private Los Angeles Tour Story

Milo & Olive - Breakfast Pizza

A tour story that never ends. Being in the private Los Angeles tour business means that we have to deal with a certain amount of “pizza pride.” Along with that comes commentary like, “We heard Los Angeles pizza sucks?” When this happens we understand the assignment clearly. We have to get our clients to shove some great pizza into their face!

Here’s a small, delicious list! First up is Prime Pizza. Their pizzas are the real deal, with a crispy yet chewy crust, tangy sauce, and perfectly melted cheese. They even offer vegan options for those who prefer it.

Next up, we have Milo & Olive. This spot is a pizza oasis in the middle of LA. Their crust is thin and crispy, and their sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. They have a great selection of toppings, but our favorite is their signature A.G.C.T. with arugula, garlic confit, fontina, parmesan, mozzarella, truffle oil!

Last but certainly not least, we have Pizzeria Mozza. Thank you Nancy Silverton! This place is an LA icon for a reason. Their crust is fluffy and chewy, their sauce is rich and flavorful, and their cheese is like a warm hug. They have a variety of pizzas to choose from, including some unique options like the squash blossom and burrata pizza. And don't even get me started on their butterscotch budino dessert.

Now, let's talk pizza pride. If you dare to say that any of these pizzas "sucks," then we respectfully suggest that perhaps you simply don't like pizza. But for the rest of us who truly appreciate a good slice, these pizza spots are a must-visit when in LA.

“These speakeasy bars are so secret, even the drinks whisper their recipes to the bartenders.” -Tour Guide on a Private Los Angeles Tour

The Wolves - DTLA

The Wolves - DTLA

Sometimes finding a good speakeasy is like trying to find Waldo in a crowd of thousands, except Waldo is a secret door and the crowd is about 4 million people in the City of Angels! We digress. On Private Los Angeles Tours, clientele will often express to us in one way or another that they do not want to “feel touristy” or that they want to go “somewhere special” that even the average Los Angelian may not know about. While categorically there are many different ways to respond, nothing quite “checks the boxes” like the vibe of classic speakeasy.

  1. The Varnish - We're starting off with a classic speakeasy bar located in Downtown LA. You'll need to enter through the back of Cole's French Dip restaurant and look for an unmarked door. Once you're inside, you'll feel like you've been transported back in time to the prohibition era.

  2. The Edison - This speakeasy bar is a former power plant that's been transformed into a stunning space. To enter, look for a small plaque on the outside of the building. Once you're inside, you'll be surrounded by vintage decor and live entertainment.

  3. The Slipper Clutch - This speakeasy is located in the heart of Hollywood, and you'll need to enter through a vintage shop. Look for the neon sign that says "Record Shop" and head to the back. Inside, you'll find a jukebox, pool table, and plenty of retro decor.

  4. The Del Monte Speakeasy - This hidden gem is located in the basement of the Townhouse bar in Venice Beach. Look for a small door and make your way downstairs to find a vintage-style speakeasy with classic drinks.

  5. No Vacancy - This speakeasy in Hollywood is set in a historic mansion with a vintage circus theme. There are multiple rooms to explore, each with its own unique atmosphere. Look for a small sign outside to find the entrance.

  6. The Roger Room - This speakeasy in West Hollywood is known for its extensive cocktail selection and vintage decor. Look for the small sign outside and head in for a cozy space with dim lighting.

  7. The Wolves - This speakeasy in Downtown LA has a minimalist decor with a focus on high-quality cocktails. The entrance is easy to miss, so keep your eyes peeled for a small door.

Remember, these bars are hidden for a reason, so don't go shouting about them from the rooftops. Kidding. Do whatever the hell you want, just tell them an awesome tour guide sent ya! Cheers to a great night out in LA!

Add Some Bloom to Your Private Los Angeles Tour: A Guide to the 2023 Superbloom

Our Private Los Angeles Tours are just blooming! Pun Intended. The 2023 superbloom is expected to be one of the most spectacular displays of wildflowers in recent memory, and there are many ways to experience it up close and personal. Here are some of the best ways to add some bloom to your private Los Angeles tour.

The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is one of the most popular places to see the superbloom in action. Located just north of Los Angeles, this 1,700-acre reserve is home to a stunning display of bright orange California poppies. Visitors can take guided tours, hike along the reserve's many trails, and even attend wildflower festivals.

For a truly unique perspective on the superbloom, consider taking a helicopter tour. You'll be able to soar over the fields of wildflowers, getting an unforgettable bird's-eye view of this natural phenomenon. Many Los Angeles tour companies offer helicopter tours, and some even provide special tours during the superbloom season.

While Joshua Tree National Park is best known for its otherworldly rock formations, it's also a great place to see the superbloom. Visitors can hike along the many trails in the park, taking in the colorful displays of wildflowers as they go. Don't forget to bring your camera, as the views here are truly breathtaking.

The Santa Monica Mountains are another great place to experience the superbloom. This rugged range of mountains is home to a wide variety of wildflowers, including lupines, poppies, and mustard. Visitors can hike along the many trails in the area, taking in the stunning views along the way.

If you want to make the most of your superbloom experience, consider taking a dedicated wildflower tour. Many Los Angeles tour companies offer these specialized tours, which take visitors to the best locations for wildflower viewing. You'll have the chance to learn about the different types of flowers you're seeing, as well as their cultural and historical significance.

If you're willing to venture a little farther from Los Angeles, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a must-see destination during the superbloom season. Located in the Colorado Desert, this park is home to a wide variety of wildflowers, including desert lilies, sand verbena, and lupines. Visitors can take guided tours, hike along the park's many trails, or simply take in the stunning views from their car.

Finally, for a truly unique superbloom experience, consider visiting the Channel Islands. These rugged, remote islands off the coast of Los Angeles are home to a variety of endemic wildflowers that can't be found anywhere else in the world. Visitors can take guided tours of the islands, exploring the many trails and taking in the stunning coastal views.

No matter how you choose to experience the 2023 superbloom, it's sure to be a sight you'll never forget. So why not add some bloom to your Private Los Angeles Tour and experience the beauty of wildflowers for yourself?

I held a real Oscar at The Academy Motion Picture Museum! (watch video) - Private Los Angeles Tours

How about that Oscars Experience video? I would have worn something different had I known I was going to be on camera!

We LOVE the The Academy Motion Picture Museum. It compliments our private Los Angeles tours perfectly! The museum is nothing short of a cinematic wonderland. Housed in the historic Saban Building on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, this magnificent museum is a treasure trove for film enthusiasts and casual moviegoers alike. As we review the museum's many highlights in this post, prepare to be immersed in the world of film like never before.

A Landmark Building with a Rich History: The Saban Building, previously known as the May Company Building, is an architectural gem that has stood the test of time. Designed by Albert C. Martin and Samuel A. Marx in 1939, the Streamline Moderne structure has now been transformed by the renowned architect Renzo Piano into a modern museum that pays tribute to its historical roots.

The Sphere and the Red Carpet: Upon entering the museum, visitors are greeted by the impressive glass sphere that houses the David Geffen Theater, a 1,000-seat state-of-the-art venue for screenings, premieres, and special events. The red carpet that leads from the entrance to the theater pays homage to Hollywood's glamorous film premieres and awards ceremonies.

Immersive Exhibitions: The Academy Motion Picture Museum boasts an extensive collection of film memorabilia, costumes, and artifacts. Permanent exhibitions, like the "History of Cinema" and "Academy Awards Through the Years," give visitors an in-depth look at the evolution of the film industry and the stories behind the Oscars. Temporary exhibitions, such as "The Art of Costume Design" and "The Science of Sound," showcase the work of industry professionals who bring the magic of movies to life.

Interactive Experiences: One of the most exciting aspects of the museum is its interactive experiences, allowing visitors to dive into the world of filmmaking. From green screen demonstrations to virtual reality explorations of movie sets, these hands-on activities provide a unique opportunity to gain insight into the creative process and technical aspects of film production.

The Oscars Experience:: No visit to the Academy Motion Picture Museum would be complete without a stop at the Oscars Experience, an interactive exhibit that invites visitors to step into the shoes of Hollywood's elite. Take a walk on the red carpet, pose with a genuine Oscar statuette, and relive iconic moments from the history of the Academy Awards. The Oscars Experience goes through October 1, 2023!

Education and Outreach Programs: In addition to its exhibits, the museum also offers a range of education and outreach programs. Film screenings, workshops, and panel discussions featuring industry professionals aim to inspire and educate the next generation of filmmakers, as well as foster a deeper appreciation for the art of cinema among the general public.

Vintage Speakeasy new to Los Angeles

The brand new Los Angeles Bathtub Gin, famous in New York is now in Los Angeles and opening today! Our guests are going to love this new gem of an arrival! A new bar serving classic drinks with a twist of prohibition-era cocktails, coupled with the vibe of old-school bohemian bathhouses.

Bathtub Gin is the creation of Dave Oz, who first created the concept in Manhattan. The Los Angles Bathtub Gin has cleverly nestled the sibling Stone Street Coffee on Melrose & Formosa.

The speakeasy menu includes concoctions such as The Smoky Old Fashioned, The New Yorker, and even a Moscow Mule. We will be rooting for this establishment and sending over our discerning clientele to wind-down post-private Los Angeles tours.

Hey Tour Guide... Play Lil Nas X - MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)

We get a lot of song requests on our Private Los Angeles Tours and we know Lil Nas X - MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) is going to be a track that stands the test of time. The lyrics combined with the video deliver a powerful message of pride and individuality with Lil Nas X alter-egos, historically inspired scenes, mythology, an intimate session with an alien version of himself, a… well, we have already said too much! Just watch and listen!
