National Beer Day

Celebrating in Los Angeles!

April 7 marks a special day for beer enthusiasts across the United States - National Beer Day. This annual celebration honors the day that beer was once again allowed to be legally manufactured and sold in the U.S. after a long, dry period of Prohibition. The date commemorates the enactment of the Cullen-Harrison Act on April 7, 1933, which President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law, famously remarking, “I think this would be a good time for a beer.” This act allowed for the sale of beer with an alcohol content of 3.2% by weight (approximately 4% by volume), which was thought to be too low to be intoxicating, thus marking the beginning of the end of Prohibition in America. On that first day, it’s said that 1.5 million barrels of beer were consumed, illustrating just how much Americans missed their brew.

National Beer Day isn’t just a nod to beer’s legality but a celebration of the rich tapestry of brewing that has developed in the U.S. over the years.
